3 & 4 Mile Bays Taupō: Designated Swim-Only Areas on Lake Taupō

Three Mile Bay and Four Mile Bay are two of Lake Taupō’s designated swim-only areas, located south-east of the town centre along the lakefront. The bays are protected from all vessel traffic — no boats, jet skis or watercraft of any kind may enter — making them among the safest swimming environments on the lake. The Rotary Across the Lake Swim, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest open-water swimming events, uses Three Mile Bay as its finish point.

The Swim-Only Designation

Lake Taupō has seven designated swim-only bays, established under bylaws administered by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). The designation prohibits all vessels from entering the marked area. Boundaries are defined by black and white banded posts on shore and corresponding buoys in the water. The Taupō Harbourmaster monitors compliance.

Three Mile Bay and Four Mile Bay sit side by side along the south-eastern lakefront and together form a continuous protected swimming area. The water is clear and fresh, consistent with Lake Taupō’s general water quality, which is monitored seasonally by the Waikato Regional Council.

The Across the Lake Swim

Three Mile Bay is the finish point for the Rotary Across the Lake Swim, an annual open-water swimming event that crosses from Acacia Bay on the lake’s western shore to the town-side beaches. The event typically includes a full lake crossing of around 3.8 km and a shorter 1 km course along the shoreline near Three Mile Bay. It is one of the largest freshwater open-water swim events in New Zealand.

Getting There

The bays are accessible on foot or by bike via the Lions Walk (Great Lake Walkway), which runs along the lake shore south-east from the Taupō town waterfront. By car, Lake Terrace provides road access to the bays, with parking areas along the route. Wharewaka Point Reserve — with BBQ facilities and toilets — is also along this stretch of the waterfront.
