Taupo Walking Tracks

Scenic Trails from Lakefront to Forest!

Taupō and the wider district have an excellent range of walking tracks, from flat lakefront strolls to demanding volcanic summits. The Great Lake Walkway (Lion’s Walk) runs along the lakefront right from town and is the easiest starting point for most visitors. Huka Falls Walk and the loop tracks around Spa Thermal Park combine geothermal scenery with accessible river walking. For more ambitious days out, the Mt Tauhara Track rewards the climb with 360-degree views over the lake and volcanic peaks, while the Tongariro Alpine Crossing — about an hour south — remains one of New Zealand’s greatest single-day hikes. The Craters of the Moon Walkway, Opepe Bush Reserve, Lake Rotopounamu and the Kaimanawa Forest Park tracks add variety for those staying longer in the region.
