Great Lake Walkway (Lions Walk) Taupō: 10 km Sealed Lakefront Path

The Great Lake Walkway — also known as the Lions Walk — is a 10-kilometre sealed path running south-east along the shore of Lake Taupō from the town centre to Five Mile Bay. The path follows the lake edge through residential Taupō, past geothermal Hot Water Beach and the Waipahihi Bay area, finishing at Five Mile Bay campsite. It is flat, fully sealed, and open to walkers and cyclists at all hours. The walkway is the signature lakefront experience in Taupō and is well used year-round.

The Route

The walkway begins at the Taupō Boat Harbour on Lake Terrace and heads south-east along the lake shore. In the first few kilometres it passes through the central Taupō lakefront area — past the main beach, AC Baths access, and the residential streets closest to the water. As it continues south-east, the path becomes quieter, passing through the Waipahihi Bay area and reaching Hot Water Beach, where geothermal springs warm the sand and shallow lake water.

Beyond Hot Water Beach the path continues along the undeveloped lake edge, with open water views to the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park across the lake. The final section reaches Five Mile Bay and the DOC campsite at the end of the track. Most walkers do a portion of the route and return — the section from Taupō to Hot Water Beach (approximately 6–7 km) is the most popular stretch.

Highlights Along the Way

The Steaming Bean coffee cart operates near the Hot Water Beach section of the path in season, making it a useful halfway point. Lake views to Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe, and Ruapehu are visible on clear days across the open water. The path also passes close to the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve and the boat ramp areas used by the lakefront fishing charter fleet.

What Visitors Say

“The lakefront path is genuinely one of the best in New Zealand — flat, sealed, views of the lake and the mountains the whole way. We cycled to Hot Water Beach and back and it was perfect.”
