Day Trips From Taupo

Exploring Out Of Town. Adventure Time!

Taupō sits near the geographic centre of the North Island, making it a strong base for day trips in almost every direction. Closest to town, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids and Craters of the Moon are all within 20–30 minutes and easily combined in a half-day. The Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings are a short boat trip from the Taupō marina. Further out, Orakei Korako (about 40 minutes north) is one of the region’s best-kept geothermal secrets, accessible only by ferry. Kinloch on the western shore offers a quiet lakeside escape and world-class golf. For big days out, Tongariro National Park is about an hour south — home to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing — and Rotorua is roughly 80 minutes north for geothermal and cultural experiences. Pureora Forest Park and the Tongariro River near Turangi add tramping, fishing and native bird watching to the mix.
