Things to do in Taupo

An awesome list of attractions and activities in Taupo

Taupō sits at the edge of Australasia’s largest freshwater lake, surrounded by geothermal activity, volcanic landscapes and a Waikato River that powers through gorges before reaching the famous Huka Falls. The town punches well above its size for things to do — from skydiving and jet boating to quiet lakeside walks and geothermal parks you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Natural Highlights

Huka Falls is New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction — and for good reason. The Waikato River squeezes through a narrow 15-metre-wide gorge before dropping eight metres into a churning turquoise pool, with around 220,000 litres of water passing through every second. A short walk from the car park leads to the viewing footbridge directly above the falls. Jet boat tours run directly beneath them.

Lake Taupō fills the caldera left by one of the world’s largest volcanic eruptions, roughly 27,000 years ago. At 616 square kilometres, it is Australasia’s largest freshwater lake — so large it affects local weather and is a consistent feature on the horizon from most of Taupō’s suburbs. Swimming, boating, fishing, paddleboarding and sailing all happen on the lake year-round.

Geothermal Experiences

Craters of the Moon is a walkable geothermal field on the northern outskirts of town. Steam vents, bubbling mud pools and collapsed craters cover a landscape that looks — and sounds — like something from another planet. The loop walk takes around 45 minutes and is suitable for most fitness levels.

Wairakei Thermal Valley, just north of Taupō, features mud pools, silica terraces, hot springs and geothermal vents in a quieter, less commercial setting. The area is linked to one of the world’s oldest geothermal power stations, which has been generating electricity from the ground since 1958.

Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park sits about 38 kilometres north of Taupō and is accessible only by a short ferry trip across Lake Ohakuri. Geysers, colourful silica terraces, hot springs and a hidden cave make it one of the region’s most impressive geothermal sites — and one of the least crowded.

Adventure Activities

Taupō is one of New Zealand’s leading adventure sport destinations. Skydiving from 15,000 feet over the lake is arguably the town’s signature experience, with several operators running tandem jumps that take in the entire Taupō basin on the way down. Jet boating runs on the Waikato River below Huka Falls, and bungy jumping and white-water rafting on the nearby Waikato and Tongariro rivers round out the main adrenaline options. Most operators are based in town and bookings can be made directly or through the i-SITE.

Cultural Experiences

The Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carving is a large cliff-face carving depicting the legendary tohunga (priest) Ngātoro-i-rangi, who guided the Arawa and Tūwharetoa ancestors to the Taupō region. It can only be viewed from the water — kayak tours and boat cruises depart from the Taupō marina. The carving is considered one of New Zealand’s most significant contemporary Māori artworks.

Walking and Cycling

The Taupō Great Lake Trail and several shorter lakefront and river walks give both casual walkers and serious trampers plenty to explore around town. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing — often rated New Zealand’s greatest single-day walk — is about an hour’s drive south, through the volcanic terrain of Tongariro National Park. Local cycling tracks around the lake and through the Wairakei Tourist Park forest are popular for mountain biking.
