The Track

From carpark 1, the track follows the lake shore westward through native bush and along rocky lake-edge terrain toward Tōtara Bay. The lake views from this section are south-west across the open water toward Taupō township and Mt Tauhara — on a clear day the volcanic peaks of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe, and Ruapehu are visible in the distance to the south.

The track passes several small bays and rocky points along the way, with lake access for swimming and picnics at various spots. The bush fringe along this section of the shore is a mix of native shrubs and small trees, providing shade and shelter. Carparks 2 and 3 are positioned further along Acacia Bay Road, allowing walkers to access the middle and far sections of the track without starting from carpark 1. From carpark 3, the track leads approximately 30 minutes to Whakamoenga Point, where flat volcanic rocks at the water’s edge make a good spot for a swim.

What Visitors Say
