About the Track

The track starts at the first car park on Acacia Bay Road and follows the lakeshore around Tōtara Bay. A large group of pines marks Te Karaka Point at the far end of the bay, where a side track climbs back to the second car park for a shorter loop option.

The main track continues to Rangatira Point, with another side track connecting to the third car park. The final section to Whakamoenga Point passes through private property; walkers must stay on the marked public access track.

At Whakamoenga Point, flat volcanic rocks offer a vantage point for views across Lake Taupō. On clear days the peaks of Tongariro National Park are visible, including Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu, while Mt Tauhara stands prominently to the east.

Swimming, Fishing and Picnicking

The sheltered bay provides calm conditions ideal for swimming. Whakamoenga Point is a popular spot for swimming, fishing and picnics, reachable in about 30 minutes from the third car park. The track stays close to the water, offering a quieter alternative to the more exposed town waterfront.
