Whakamoenga Point
The destination of this track is Whakamoenga Point, a low rocky headland where the lake shore extends into the water as a shelf of flat volcanic rock. The rocks here are smooth and flat, making them ideal for sitting, sunbathing, and accessing the lake for a swim. The lake views from the point look south across the open water toward Taupō township and, on clear days, the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park on the far southern shore.
The point is relatively sheltered from the prevailing north-westerly wind by the bay’s configuration, making it one of the more pleasant spots for extended time at the water on this side of the lake. It is quiet — accessible only on foot from the carpark — and less visited than the main Taupō lakefront.
The Track
The walk from carpark 3 to Whakamoenga Point follows the lake edge through native bush and along the rocky shoreline. The terrain is flat with minimal elevation change throughout. The track is part of the broader Rangatira Point Walking Track system — walkers starting from carpark 1 can continue past Rangatira Point to reach Whakamoenga Point as a 1.5-hour return walk from the first carpark.
What Visitors Say
“Parked at carpark 3 and it was only a 15-minute walk to the point — great flat rocks for sitting and a lovely spot for a swim. Uncrowded and quiet, with wonderful views across the lake. A real find.”
