The Trout Centre
The Tongariro National Trout Centre was established in 1927 and operated as a major hatchery supplying trout to rivers across New Zealand and the Pacific for many decades. The hatchery no longer raises fish on the same scale, but remains a working facility and an interesting exhibit in its own right. Visitors can walk through the hatchery ponds and see trout at various life stages.
The underwater viewing chamber is the most unusual feature — a below-water-level window into the river system where wild trout can be observed in their natural habitat. The freshwater aquarium displays other river species, and the visitor centre has educational displays on the Taupō Trout Fishery and freshwater conservation. A fishing library with equipment dating from the 1880s is also on site.
The River Walk
From the visitor centre, a short river walk follows the bank of the Tongariro River — the most famous trout fishing river in New Zealand and one of the top rainbow trout fisheries in the world. The walk gives access to a section of the river where wild trout can often be seen in the clear water, particularly in autumn and winter when fish move upstream to spawn. Feeding wild trout at the designated feeding area is a popular activity, particularly with children.
What Visitors Say
“Much better than expected — the underwater viewing window is brilliant for seeing the trout up close, and the river walk is lovely. A great stop if you’re passing through Turangi. Free entry makes it an easy decision.”
