The Trail

The trail begins at the Huka Falls carpark and follows the true right bank of the Waikato River north. From Huka Falls, the river transitions from the dramatic compressed gorge to a wider, calmer channel flowing through the Wairakei Tourist Park area. The trail passes through a mix of open farmland and riverside bush, with views of the river throughout.

At the northern end, the trail arrives at the Aratiatia Dam and the controlled rapids below. The Aratiatia Rapids are a scheduled attraction — the dam gates open at set times (10 am, noon, and 2 pm, with an additional 4 pm release in summer) releasing water that recreates the original rapids through the gorge below. Viewing platforms at the dam and downstream provide a good vantage point for the release.

Aratiatia Rapids

Before the Wairakei hydroelectric dam was built in the 1950s, the Aratiatia gorge was one of the most dramatic stretches of the Waikato River. The dam blocked the natural flow and the rapids were submerged. Since the 1990s, scheduled gate releases have restored the rapids for viewing purposes. The release takes around 20–30 minutes from first flow to the gorge filling and settling.
