Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa is a geothermal bathing and cultural experience on Wairākei Drive, about 5 kilometres north of Taupō town centre. The Pools
The thermal pools at Wairakei Terraces use separated geothermal water from the Wairākei project — mineral-rich water that would otherwise be discarded from the power generation process. The pools have a characteristic silky feel from dissolved silica and natural minerals, and sit within landscaped gardens with views of the surrounding bush.
Three pools of varying temperatures allow visitors to move between the cooler relaxation pool (35°C) and the hotter soaking pool (40°C). The facility is adults-only (14+), which keeps the atmosphere calm and well-suited to a longer stay.
The Silica Terrace Walk
Alongside the thermal pools, Wairakei Terraces has constructed a series of silica terraces — built up over time by the flow of geothermal water carrying dissolved silica — similar in concept to the historic pink and white terraces of Rotomahana, which were destroyed in the 1886 Tarawera eruption. A guided Māori cultural experience follows the terrace walk with commentary on the cultural and geological significance of the landscape. The walk is separate to pool admission and bookable independently.
