Whakamaru Recreation Reserve: Freedom Camping on the Waikato River

Whakamaru Recreation Reserve is a riverside reserve on the Waikato River, about 50 kilometres south of Taupō near the small township of Whakamaru, within the Taupō district. The reserve is a designated freedom camping area with hot showers, BBQ facilities and toilets — more well-equipped than many freedom camping spots — and sits alongside the river with open grassed areas and access to the water. It’s a practical overnight stop for those travelling between Taupō and the Waikato, or a base for exploring the river and Lake Maraetai area.

About the Reserve

The reserve sits on the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, at a point where the river broadens into Lake Maraetai — one of the hydro lakes created by the Waikato’s chain of power stations. The grassed camping area is well-maintained, and the riverside setting provides easy access to the water for fishing, kayaking or simply relaxing by the river.

Whakamaru township itself is a small rural service community. The reserve is the main visitor facility in the area and makes a natural stop on routes between Taupō and Hamilton or Rotorua via the inland route through Atiamuri.

Fishing

The Waikato River at Whakamaru is within the Taupō trout fishing district, which means a Taupō district fishing licence is required (separate to and in addition to a standard freshwater fishing licence). The river holds rainbow trout, and this stretch of the Waikato sees reasonable angling pressure from visiting fishers. Check Fish & Game Central Districts for current regulations and licence requirements before fishing.
