About Te Kapua Park
The park is named Te Kapua — a name that connects the site to the rohe of Ngāti Tūrangitukua, the local hapū of Tūrangi. The park covers a broad, flat expanse with different zones for different users: the aquatic centre anchors the southern end, sports fields occupy the central area, and the playground, skate park, and courts form the recreational cluster on the western side.
The Genesis Energy Turangi Aquatic Centre provides year-round swimming for the community. It is the main indoor swimming facility in the southern Taupō district and serves both recreational swimmers and competitive squads.
The Warrior Mountains Playground
Te Kapua Park is home to a culturally significant playground developed through a collaboration between Ngāti Tūrangitukua, Taupō District Council, and Bespoke Landscape Architects. The design is rooted in the stories of the surrounding area — including the Tongariro River and local mountains. The hīnaki (fishing trap) play structure represents Tūmoana, an old fishing ground on the river, while the water play area references the Hīrangi stream.
The playground was awarded the Te Karanga o te Tui Award 2024, recognising its excellence in design and community engagement. It features climbing nets, slides, water play, and a separate area for younger children, all on accessible rubber surfacing with shade.
Sports and Recreation
The park’s sports pavilion and fields are used by local codes including rugby, cricket, and other organised sports. The tennis courts, outdoor basketball court, and skate park extend the appeal to a wide age range. The park is a short walk from the Tūrangi town centre, making it easy to combine a visit with lunch at one of the nearby cafes or a stop at the local shops.
