3 & 4 Mile Bays Taupō: Swim-Only Areas on Lake Taupō

Last updated July 2026

Three Mile Bay and Four Mile Bay form one of Lake Taupō’s seven designated swim-only areas, located south-east of the Taupō town centre along the lakefront. The area between the bays is protected from all vessel traffic under Department of Internal Affairs bylaws, with no boats, jet skis or other watercraft permitted inside the marked zone. This makes it one of the safest swimming spots on the lake. The Rotary Across the Lake Swim finishes at Three Mile Bay each year.

About 3 & 4 Mile Bays

The designated swim-only area lies between Three Mile Bay and Four Mile Bay on the south-eastern shore of Lake Taupō. It is one of seven such zones around the lake where vessels are completely prohibited to protect swimmers.

Boundaries are clearly marked with black and white banded posts on the shore and corresponding buoys in the water. The Taupō Harbourmaster enforces the rules. The water remains clear and fresh, typical of Lake Taupō, with seasonal monitoring by the Waikato Regional Council through LAWA.

The bays sit along the popular Great Lake Pathway, also known as the Lions Walk, which provides easy pedestrian and cycling access from the town waterfront. Roadside parking is available along Lake Terrace, and nearby Wharewaka Point Reserve offers additional facilities including toilets and BBQ areas.

The Swim-Only Designation

Lake Taupō has seven designated swim-only areas established under bylaws administered by the Department of Internal Affairs. These zones prohibit all vessels from entering the marked areas. The full list includes Yacht Club Taupō, Main Beach Taupō, Between 3 & 4 Mile Bays, Kinloch, Pukawa, Kuratau and Whareroa. Compliance is monitored by the Harbourmaster.

The Across the Lake Swim

Three Mile Bay serves as the finish point for the Rotary Across the Lake Swim, New Zealand’s largest freshwater open-water swimming event. The main 4.2 km course starts at Acacia Bay on the western shore and finishes at Three Mile Bay. Shorter 1 km and 2 km options start and finish near Three Mile Bay. The event has run annually since 1963.

Getting There

Walkers and cyclists can reach the bays via the paved Great Lake Pathway (Lions Walk), which continues past the Three Mile Bay boat ramp. Drivers can use Lake Terrace with parking areas along the route. The location is approximately 3–4 km south-east of the Taupō town centre.

What Visitors Often Say

Swimmers appreciate the calm, protected water and clear boundaries that keep boats away, making it feel very safe for families and longer swims.

Many enjoy combining a swim with a walk or cycle along the lakeside pathway, noting the scenic views and easy access from town.
