Waipunga Falls: Multi-Tiered Roadside Waterfall on the Napier–Taupō Road

Waipunga Falls is a 40-metre multi-tiered waterfall on the Napier–Taupō Highway (State Highway 5), approximately 55 kilometres east of Taupō. The falls consist of two 40-metre cascades that converge into the Waipunga River below, dropping in segments over dark rock with a layered, trickling effect across the tiers. They are one of the most accessible waterfall viewpoints in the central North Island — viewable directly from a roadside lookout or with a 1-minute walk for a closer view. Entry is free and the stop takes only a few minutes, making it a natural break on the Taupō–Napier drive.

The Falls

Waipunga Falls drops in three segments over a dark volcanic rock face, with the water spreading and collecting across natural ledges before converging into the Waipunga River below. Two main curtains of water fall approximately 40 metres each, meeting at the base in a pool before the river continues downstream. The falls are most impressive after rain or in spring when water flow is higher — in dry conditions the water spreads more thinly across the rock face.

The falls are visible from the roadside carpark without any walking required, though a short 1-minute walk gives a clearer view. The setting is bush-clad hillside — native vegetation frames the falls and the surrounding terrain is typical of the Hawke’s Bay–Waikato boundary country through which SH5 passes.

Getting There

Waipunga Falls is on State Highway 5 between Taupō and Napier, roughly halfway along the journey. Look for the ‘Scenic Lookout’ sign on the highway approximately 400 metres before the carpark — this gives advance warning before the pull-off. The carpark is best accessed when travelling from Taupō toward Napier (vehicles pull off to the left). When travelling in the other direction, the entry is more difficult given the speed of traffic on this section of the highway.
