Hinemaiaia River Fishing: Popular Winter Trout River East of Taupō

The Hinemaiaia River flows into the eastern shore of Lake Taupō and is one of the most popular winter fishing rivers in the Taupō district. Part of the Taupō Trout Fishery managed by DOC, the Hinemaiaia sees strong rainbow trout spawning runs from June through September and attracts high angling pressure during peak winter months. A special Taupō licence is required.

The River

The Hinemaiaia is a productive winter fishery — rainbow trout run from Lake Taupō into the river from June onwards, and the peak of the spawning run through July and August sees good numbers of fish throughout the accessible lower and middle sections. Despite being a popular river that sees heavy angling pressure in winter, it continues to produce good catches, though an early start is often needed to secure a spot on the river in the busiest months.

Nymphing is the most effective technique through most of the season. In early winter, when the first large rainbows arrive, many anglers opt for an 8-weight rod — the first fish of the winter run can be substantial. In summer, the river switches character and fishes well on the dry fly when insect hatches are active.

Access

The Hinemaiaia has one of the better access systems of the eastern Taupō rivers. The lower river can be fished by walking up from the mouth or walking down from the lower bridge carpark on SH1. A vehicle track leads upriver from the lower car park area, with additional parking bays branching off and connecting to established riverside tracks. This network makes it straightforward to reach different sections of the river without a long walk.

The upper reaches are closed in winter during spawning — this closed water is sign-posted at the river and detailed on the DOC Taupō Trout Fishery website. Always check current closures before fishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to fish the Hinemaiaia?
Winter — June to September — when rainbow trout spawning runs are at their peak. The river is open year-round (subject to upper river closures) but winter is when it sees the most fish and the most angler activity.

Is the Hinemaiaia busy in winter?
Yes — it sees significant angling pressure during the winter spawning run, and an early start is often needed to secure a good position on the river.

Is the upper Hinemaiaia closed in winter?
Yes — the upper reaches are closed during winter to protect spawning fish. The closure is sign-posted at the river and detailed on the DOC website.

What licence do I need?
A Taupō special licence from DOC — this is separate from a standard New Zealand fishing licence and covers the entire Taupō Trout Fishery.

The Hinemaiaia is one of several eastern lakeshore fishing rivers. See the Taupō fishing hub and the Tauranga-Taupō River guide for other options in the fishery.
