Huka Falls Loop: The Short Walk at New Zealand’s Most-Visited Natural Attraction

The route follows the Waikato River gorge to the lookout above Huka Falls, where the entire flow of the Waikato River forces through a 15-metre-wide channel before dropping 11 metres into a turquoise pool below. Huka Falls

Huka Falls is formed where the Waikato River — New Zealand’s longest river — is compressed from a width of 100 metres down to approximately 15 metres as it passes through a rhyolite gorge, then drops 11 metres into the pool below. At peak flow, around 220,000 litres of water pass through every second. The colour of the water in the gorge and pool below is a vivid aquamarine caused by the depth, flow speed, and volcanic minerals carried from Lake Taupō upstream.

The main lookout is a platform above the falls giving a direct view into the gorge and over the falls crest. A second viewpoint on the opposite bank is accessible via a footbridge below the falls, looking back upstream at the gorge and falls from the pool side.

The Loop Route

From the carpark, the track follows the true left bank of the river upstream to the main lookout above the falls — around 800 metres of sealed path through native vegetation. After viewing the falls from above, the loop continues across the footbridge over the river below the falls and returns along the true right bank to the carpark. The full loop is 1.4 km. The path is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs on the main lookout approach, though the footbridge crossing has some steps.

What Visitors Say
