Huka Trails Taupō: River Walking and Cycling from Spa Thermal Park

The Huka Trails are a network of walking and cycling paths that follow the Waikato River north from Spa Thermal Park in Taupō to Huka Falls and beyond to the Aratiatia Dam. Easy and family-friendly, these are among the most accessible riverside walks in the region — with the added interest of a natural hot spring stream and New Zealand’s most-visited natural attraction along the way.

Starting at Spa Thermal Park

The walk begins at Spa Thermal Park, where the Otumuheke Stream — a naturally warm geothermal stream — flows into the Waikato River. This confluence creates a popular natural swimming spot where the hot stream meets the cooler river, free to use year-round. From the car park, a short walk down to the riverbank brings you to the crossing point for the stream.

The main walking track then continues along the river’s edge heading north, following the Waikato as it flows downstream toward Huka Falls. The track is well-defined and stays close to the water throughout, offering good views along the river and through the surrounding bush.

Huka Falls and Beyond

The track arrives at Huka Falls after about 5.5 kilometres — New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction, where the Waikato River squeezes through a narrow gorge and drops eight metres into a churning turquoise pool. The walking track accesses the falls from the river level, a different perspective to the road bridge above. From Huka Falls, walkers can continue another 7 kilometres to the Aratiatia Dam, where a spectacular water release happens multiple times daily (check times before heading out — they vary by season).

Walking vs. Cycling

The main riverside walking track is for walkers only — cyclists use the Rotary Ride, a dedicated cycling route that runs parallel to (but slightly away from) the river. Both routes cover roughly the same stretch between Spa Park and Huka Falls. Cyclists should note the distinction — following the walking track on a bike is not permitted and the two routes diverge in places.
