Kinloch is a small lakeside village on the western shore of Lake Taupō, about 20 minutes’ drive from the town centre — and it sits at the heart of the Great Lake Trail network. The Kinloch Loop connects the village to Whakaipo Bay via the W2K section of the trail, a 13-kilometre Grade 3 ride with strong lake views and varied terrain through native and planted forest.

About the Ride
The W2K section of the Great Lake Trail runs from Kinloch east across the peninsula between Whangamata Bay and Whakaipo Bay, offering views back across the lake toward Kinloch and across to the volcanic peaks on clear days. The trail loops over the eastern headland of the peninsula before dropping into Whakaipo Bay — a sheltered, calm bay popular for swimming in summer.
The Headland Loop is an optional 9.5-kilometre extension that branches off the main W2K track and adds a more physically demanding circuit with additional elevation and exposed ridgeline riding. It suits confident intermediate riders looking for more climbing and better views.
Kinloch Village
Kinloch has a small general store and café at the marina, making it a good base for a day ride. The village has a relaxed, unhurried character — primarily a bach (holiday home) community, with the Kinloch Golf Club’s internationally regarded course as its best-known attraction. A boat shuttle from the Taupō marina to Kinloch is available for those who want to start the trail by water.
Combining with the Wider Great Lake Trail
The Kinloch Loop (W2K) connects directly to the Kawakawa section of the Great Lake Trail running south to Kawakawa Bay and Waihaha, making it possible to ride longer multi-day sections as part of a full Great Lake Trail itinerary. Many riders start at Whakaipo Bay, ride through to Kinloch, and take the boat shuttle back to Taupō marina.
