The Kuratau River drains into the western shore of Lake Taupō, with Lake Kuratau — a small hydro lake in the upper catchment — providing additional fishing upstream. Both are part of the Taupō Trout Fishery managed by DOC, requiring a special Taupō licence. The western shore is remote and less visited than the eastern rivers, making the Kuratau area a quieter alternative for anglers willing to make the drive.

The Kuratau River and Lake Kuratau
The Kuratau catchment has two distinct fishing opportunities. The Kuratau River mouth at Lake Taupō’s western shore is a productive rip fishery — trout congregate where the river current meets the lake, particularly in summer as the lake warms and fish seek cooler tributary water. This is fly fishing territory, with the same rules that apply to other Lake Taupō river mouths.
Lake Kuratau, the small hydro lake upstream, offers a different experience. It is the smallest of Taupō’s fishable lakes and holds a high population of rainbow and brown trout — smaller on average than the river fish, but responsive to a wide range of methods. Unlike most of the Taupō fishery, spin fishing is permitted on Lake Kuratau and on the Kuratau River above the hydro dam, making it suitable for anglers who prefer spinning to fly fishing. Lake Kuratau can be productive on a spinner and fishes well from both shore and boat. A kayak is sufficient for covering the lake.
Getting There
The western lake shore is considerably more remote than the eastern shore rivers accessible from SH1. The Kuratau area is reached via Mangakino (approximately 75 km from Taupō town). The drive takes in some of the district’s more rural western landscape. The western shore’s relative remoteness means far less angling pressure than the Tongariro, Waitahanui, or Hinemaiaia rivers.
