Lake Taupō Swimming Spots: Free Beaches and Swim-Only Bays Around the Lake

Lake Taupō is New Zealand’s largest lake and one of the country’s best freshwater swimming destinations. The water is clear, temperatures are comfortable in summer, and access is free at all the public reserves around the shore. The Department of Internal Affairs designates seven swim-only bays on the lake where powerboats are excluded — marked by black-and-white buoys in the water — providing calm, safe conditions for swimmers.

Swim-Only Bays

The seven designated swim-only areas on Lake Taupō are spaced around the lake and each has public reserve access with facilities. These areas are marked with black-and-white banded posts on shore and buoys in the water. Powerboats must stay outside the marked zones.

The seven swim-only areas include Kinloch (western shore, with pontoon and community book shed), Two Mile Bay (on the Lions Walk route), Wharewaka Point / Four Mile Bay, the main town beach along Lake Terrace, Acacia Bay (north-west, with swimming platform), Kawakawa Bay, and Hot Water Beach (geothermal — sand warm underfoot from geothermal heat below).

Town Waterfront Swimming

The most accessible swimming from Taupō town is along the Taupō Lakefront Reserve on Lake Terrace. The beach here is sheltered, the water is clear, and parking is plentiful along the foreshore. The Lions Walk continues south-east from the town waterfront to Two Mile Bay and Wharewaka Point, passing multiple swimming spots along the way.

Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach is a small bay where geothermal heat from below warms the sand underfoot and hot-water springs flow into the lake. It is one of the more unusual swim spots on the lake — the water in the shallows can be noticeably warmer than the open lake. The beach has BBQ and toilet facilities and is accessible by road.

Otumuheke Stream at Spa Thermal Park

For geothermal swimming, the Otumuheke Stream at Spa Thermal Park (25 minutes north of town on foot) is a natural hot spring where geothermal water flows into the Waikato River. It is free, open 7:00am to 8:00pm, and has changing rooms, lockers, and toilets. Unlike the lake swim spots, this is river access rather than lake access.

Southern Lake Settlements

Around the southern and western shores, the lakeside settlements each have public reserve access to the lake for swimming — including Whakaipo Bay, Acacia Bay, Kinloch, Pukawa, Omori, Kuratau, and the settlements near Tūrangi. These are quieter than the town waterfront but offer the same clear lake water in more secluded settings.
