About the Warrior Mountains Playground
The playground’s design is rooted in a Ngāti Tūwharetoa legend — the ancient story of four mountain warriors, Tongariro, Taranaki, Tauhara, and Pūtauaki, who competed for the affections of the beautiful maiden mountain Pīhanga. Each maunga is represented within the play space through specific design elements created in collaboration with Tūwharetoa artist Kingi Pitiroi. The result is a playground that is culturally grounded in the landscape visible from the domain, with the volcanic peaks that inspired the legend visible on the horizon.
The $1.2 million investment by Taupō District Council replaced an older play structure and created a genuine destination playground — one designed to attract visitors as well as serve local families. The rubber surfacing throughout makes it accessible for children with mobility needs.
Play Equipment
The Warrior Mountains Playground includes three slides of varying height and length, climbing frames, a set of swings, an in-ground jumping trampoline, and a climbing log feature. A separate area for toddlers is set apart from the main equipment, giving younger children their own space. Shaded areas are incorporated into the design for hot summer days.
The Tongariro Domain
The playground sits within the wider Tongariro South Domain — a large green space in the town centre that includes the Taupō Library, the Great Lake Centre (events venue), Taupō Museum, the visitor information centre, tennis courts, bowling greens, and the Garden of Significance with roses, native and exotic plantings. The domain is a central gathering place for the town and is used for community events, markets, and informal recreation throughout the year.
What Visitors Say
“The in-ground trampoline was the biggest hit with our kids. The whole playground is very well thought out — there’s enough for different ages and it doesn’t feel cramped. Central location is a bonus.”
“Really impressive playground. The cultural story behind the design is well told on the information boards. Easy to grab lunch from the nearby cafes and let the kids play.”
