The Lake and Track
Lake Rotopounamu occupies a maar crater — a shallow volcanic depression — formed by ancient geothermal activity in the Tongariro Volcanic Zone. The lake has no surface inlet streams and is fed by groundwater, contributing to its exceptional clarity. It sits in a small basin surrounded by mature native forest that has been protected as part of Tongariro National Park.
The track loops around the full perimeter of the lake through a canopy of podocarp-broadleaf forest. Rimu, mataī, tōtara, and tawa are all present, along with dense fern understory. The track is well-maintained and clearly marked throughout, with several spots where the forest opens to give views across the lake surface. Birdlife in the forest includes kererū (native pigeon), tūī, and New Zealand fantail (pīwakawaka).
Biosecurity and Conservation
Lake Rotopounamu and its surrounding forest are managed as a pest-free conservation area. DOC requests that visitors clean boots and equipment before arriving to prevent the spread of didymo (freshwater algae) and other invasive species. Swimming in the lake is not recommended to protect its water quality and ecology.
