Huka Falls Taupō: New Zealand’s Most Visited Natural Attraction

Huka Falls is the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand and one of Taupō’s most recognisable landmarks. The entire flow of the Waikato River — New Zealand’s longest river, draining Lake Taupō — is compressed from its normal 100-metre width down to just 15 metres as it passes through a hard volcanic rock gorge, then drops 11 metres into a churning pool below. Approximately 220,000 litres of water pass through every second — enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool in around 11 seconds. The result is one of the most powerful and visually dramatic waterfalls in New Zealand, with the water in the gorge and pool taking on a vivid aquamarine colour from depth and flow speed. Entry is free and the falls are accessible around the clock.

The Falls

The name Huka comes from the Māori word for foam — an apt description for the white churning water at the base of the falls. The gorge itself is formed from rhyolite bedrock that the river has been unable to erode at the same rate as the wider riverbed upstream, creating the sudden compression. The colour of the water — a deep aquamarine — is caused by the depth of the pool below the falls and the speed at which the water moves through the gorge, which scatters blue light. The effect is most vivid in clear weather and at the main lookout platform directly above the gorge edge.

How to See the Falls

The main lookout is reached via an 800-metre sealed path from the carpark. The platform sits above the gorge and gives a direct view over the falls and into the pool below. A second viewpoint on the opposite bank of the river — reached by a footbridge below the falls — looks back upstream at the gorge from the pool side. Both viewpoints are part of the Huka Falls Loop, a 1.4 km circuit that takes 20–30 minutes.

For a more dramatic view, Huka Falls Jet operates commercial jet boat tours from the Taupō boat harbour, traveling upstream on the Waikato River to the base of the falls, where passengers get close enough to feel the spray. This is the only way to experience the scale of the falls from below.

What Visitors Say

“Nothing really prepares you for the sheer power of Huka Falls — the volume and force of that water is staggering. The colour is unreal. A must-see, even if you’ve seen bigger waterfalls elsewhere.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Huka Falls free to visit?
Yes — access to the falls, the carpark, and the loop walk is completely free at all hours.

How far are Huka Falls from Taupō?
5 km north of Taupō town centre along Huka Falls Road — approximately 5 minutes by car.

Can I swim at Huka Falls?
No — swimming is strictly prohibited. The current in the gorge and at the base of the falls is extremely powerful and dangerous. Taupō’s designated swimming areas are on the lakefront.

How much water flows over Huka Falls?
Approximately 220,000 litres per second — the entire flow of the Waikato River, which drains Lake Taupō, is forced through the 15-metre-wide gorge.

What is the best way to see Huka Falls?
The main lookout platform above the gorge gives the most dramatic view. The Huka Falls Jet boat tour provides the only close-up view from below the falls. The full Huka Falls Loop (1.4 km, 20–30 min) gives both the upper and lower viewpoints.

What time is Huka Falls best to visit?
Early morning for fewer crowds and good light on the water. The falls are dramatic year-round and are particularly powerful after heavy rain.

Huka Falls is 5 km north of Taupō along the same road as the Huka Falls Loop Walk. The Spa Park to Huka Falls Walk connects the falls to Spa Thermal Park by a 3 km riverside track.
