About Ernest Kemp Cruises

Ernest Kemp Cruises operates daily scenic cruises on Lake Taupō, New Zealand's largest lake, aboard their beautifully maintained classic vessel. The cruise takes guests across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupō to the famous Māori Rock Carvings — a magnificent 14-metre carving of a Māori chief and two guardian figures etched into the volcanic rock face at Mine Bay, accessible only by water.

Departing from the Taupō Boat Harbour on Redoubt Street, Ernest Kemp Cruises offers a relaxed and genuinely memorable way to experience one of New Zealand's most iconic natural and cultural landmarks. With daily departures running year-round, it's an experience that fits into any Taupō visit.

The Māori Rock Carvings Cruise

The Journey

The cruise winds through the serene northern reaches of Lake Taupō, passing through stunning scenery before arriving at the sheltered bay that houses the famous carvings. Along the way, the crew shares the history and significance of both the lake and the remarkable artwork.

The Rock Carvings

The carvings at Mine Bay were created in the 1970s and 1980s by renowned Māori artist Matahi Brightwell. The central figure is Ngātoroirangi — the great navigator and tohunga (priest) who guided the Tūwharetoa people to the Taupō region centuries ago. Flanking him are two mermen (tangata-ika) guarding the entrance to the lake. The scale and artistry of the carvings make them genuinely awe-inspiring when seen up close from the water.

Cruise Schedule

Ernest Kemp Cruises operates daily departures throughout the year, with multiple trips per day during the summer season. Both morning and afternoon departures are available — check their website or call ahead for current times and bookings.
