The Suburb

Nukuhau’s position north of the Waikato River gives it a different character from the suburban areas south of the river — it is less commercially oriented, more residential, and has easy walking and cycling access to the river trail and Huka Falls Road, which leads north to Huka Falls (approximately 4 km). Many properties in Nukuhau benefit from elevated positions with views across Lake Taupō toward Mount Tauhara to the east.

The suburb has seen significant residential development since 2000, with a mix of newer builds alongside older homes dating from the early twentieth century. Huka Falls Road forms the main corridor through the area, connecting it to both the Taupō CBD to the south and the Wairakei resort precinct and Huka Falls to the north.

Walking and the River

Nukuhau’s proximity to the Waikato River makes it well-placed for access to the river trail network. The Spa Park to Huka Falls Walk follows the western bank of the Waikato River from the Spa Road thermal pools, past Nukuhau and on to Huka Falls — a 3-kilometre riverside walk that is one of the most popular in Taupō. The Great Lake Walkway also begins nearby at Taupō town, connecting the foreshore to Wairakei Resort.
