About Te Hāpua Bay Track

Te Hāpua Bay and Reserve is known for its scenic beauty, and DOC notes many visitors know it simply as “Scenic Bay”. This track lets you reach it on foot.

From Karangahape Road, a poled route crosses an easement through farmland into the scenic reserve. Just below the farmland is a viewpoint looking out over the lake, about 15 minutes from the water’s edge. From there a well-formed track drops through regenerating native bush to the bay.

DOC says the bay is popular with boaties through the summer, and while camping is prohibited on the shore, boats often anchor overnight. The walk is short, but the return is a steady climb.

Track Conditions and Tips

DOC notes the track may be more difficult after rain, and the return involves a steady climb. Expect lots of wasps in summer. There is a long-drop toilet at the bay.

The reserve is for day visits only, and DOC bans camping, fires and dogs there at all times. Check DOC before you go, tell someone your plans, and use Plan My Walk if you are combining the bay with a longer outing.
