Two Mile Bay Taupō: Popular Swim-Only Beach on the Southern Lakefront

Two Mile Bay is a designated swim-only area on the southern lakefront of Taupō, approximately two kilometres from the town centre. It is one of the seven swim-only bays on Lake Taupō protected under Department of Internal Affairs bylaws — no boats or watercraft are permitted in the marked zone. Sitting on the Lions Walk (Great Lake Walkway) route, it is a natural stop for those walking or cycling the lakefront, as well as a standalone destination for a swim.

The Swimming Area

Two Mile Bay is among the most accessible of the designated swim-only bays — close enough to town to reach easily on foot or by bike, with parking and toilets on site. The swim zone is separated from the boat traffic on the main lake by buoys and marker posts, making it a reliable choice for families and those who want defined boundaries in the water. The lake water at Two Mile Bay is clear and freshwater, monitored regularly during the summer season.

The bay sits adjacent to the Two Mile Bay boat ramp area, which is a busy launching point for the lake. The swim-only zone is distinct from the boat ramp access — the markers make this clear in the water. Kayaks and paddle boards are also used in the area outside the designated swim zone.

Lions Walk Access

Two Mile Bay is one of the key stops on the Lions Walk (officially the Great Lake Walkway), the 10-kilometre sealed path running from the Taupō town waterfront south-east to Five Mile Bay. The bay makes a natural turnaround point for a 4 km return walk from town, or a halfway point for those continuing further along the waterfront to Wharewaka Point and beyond.
