Maunganamu, Taupō: Suburb Guide to Lifestyle Country East of Town

Last updated October 2026

Maunganamu is a suburb on the eastern side of Taupō, set in open country rather than on the lake-edge streets of the town centre. It takes in lifestyle land along Caroline Drive, including the Bonshaw Park area, and country beside State Highway 5, the highway that runs east from Taupō toward Napier.

Houses sit on larger sections, often with paddocks and a view toward Mount Tauhara. There is no local shopping strip. Everyday shops, schools and other services are a short drive away in Taupō. The suburb is a quiet rural edge of town, not a visitor precinct.

About Maunganamu

Maunganamu is not a compact neighbourhood of footpaths and corner dairies. Property records treat it as a residential suburb of Taupō, but the houses are lifestyle places: larger sections, gates, paddocks and outbuildings, with Caroline Drive as the road that serves them.

Listings for that road place the Bonshaw Park lifestyle area in Maunganamu, and they regularly note views of Mount Tauhara and a position close to town and the Crown industrial area.

The built form is spread out. Property records for the suburb show homes from the mid-20th century, with most of the housing stock dating from the 1990s. Sections are measured in hectares rather than the smaller urban lots of central Taupō.

OpenStreetMap also assigns a stretch of State Highway 5, on the eastern approach to town, to Maunganamu, so the suburb includes highway-side country as well as the quieter lifestyle road.

The name is Māori. Maunga means mountain, and the suburb shares its name with a hill in this eastern country, which is the likely source of the name. A fuller traditional translation was not confirmed in the council or place-name records checked for this guide.

The wider Taupō district lies in the rohe of Ngāti Tūwharetoa. Hapū ties to a particular block should be confirmed with the iwi, not read off the suburb name.

Day to day, Maunganamu works as a rural edge of Taupō rather than as a self-contained centre. The Crown Road industrial area sits closer to town on this side, and the East Taupō Arterial carries through-traffic around the eastern side of the urban area.

Residents drive in for groceries, schools, health services and the lake. Winters here are the inland Taupō pattern: cold nights and frosts are normal, and snow on the town itself is uncommon.

Getting Around

State Highway 5 is the main road on this side of Taupō. It is the highway east toward Napier, and it is the practical way to reach the suburb from the town and from the East Taupō Arterial. Caroline Drive is a paved local road through the lifestyle properties. It is not a through-route.

There is no confirmed public bus stop on these streets. Taupō’s town buses serve the urban area, so anyone without a car should check the nearest town stop before relying on a service out here. Cycling into town is possible for confident riders, but the highway and the open rural roads are not a separated cycle route.

Getting Outdoors

Maunganamu itself is open farmland and lifestyle land, not a reserve with a formed waterfront or a playground network. The standout feature is the skyline: Mount Tauhara rises to the north and is the landmark from the higher ground along Caroline Drive. The hill the suburb is named for sits in the same eastern country.

Lake Taupō is the other obvious outing, but it is not at the end of the street. The lake shore, the town walks and the eastern hot pools are a drive away. This page is about the suburb as a place to live and visit, not a track guide to the mountain.
