What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the kura is a Ngā Kitenga Arotake Report from December 2025, which looked at how well ākonga live out the kura whakataukī in their daily lives, relationships and goals.

ERO found that tamariki are confident learners whose whole wellbeing is cared for, with kaiako drawing on approaches such as Poutiria te Aroha and Mauri Ora.

Te reo Māori runs through every part of kura life, and tamariki use it naturally each day. Learning connects tamariki to their whakapapa, marae, iwi and pepeha, and covers kaupapa such as Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Arikitanga and the Kīngitanga.

ERO also described whānau and kaimahi sharing decisions through ohu, with whānau voice shaping the kura’s plans, and wharekura students moving on through pathways such as Toi Ohomai and Gateway.

ERO’s main next step concerns the junior and middle years, Years 1 to 10. It found that assessment and tracking of progress there are not yet robust enough to show clearly where tamariki need support. Kura leaders were asked to build a clear, kura-wide process for gathering and analysing progress and achievement information within six months.
