Stand-downs and suspensions
Cases per 1,000 students in 2025, adjusted for the ages of the school’s students, compared with all New Zealand schools.
Suspensions: fewer than 5 cases in 2025, so no rate is shown.
These measure how a school responds to behaviour, and schools set their own thresholds, so they are not a measure of how students behave.
What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from March 2023. It sets out an evaluation that ERO and the school agreed to work on together: how far culturally responsive, relationship-based teaching lifts engagement, behaviour and learning for every student.
ERO listed several strengths the school can build on. These include its focus on boys’ achievement through teacher inquiry and a class for boys only, its use of the Rongohia Te Hau survey to gather the views of students, staff and whānau, and its work with Ngāti Tūwharetoa on a local curriculum grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
From here the school plans to bring the Tūwharetoa Cultural Competencies into its local curriculum, so learning feels more relevant to students and attendance improves. It also aims to deepen teachers’ understanding of Ngāti Tūwharetoatanga with support from iwi, and to help teachers learn te reo Māori through the Te Ahu o Te Reo Māori programme.

Enrolling
Children who live in the home zone have the right to enrol. Out-of-zone places are offered under the enrolment scheme, by ballot when there are more applicants than places, with students accepted into the rūmaki programme given first priority, followed by siblings of current students. The school publishes its out-of-zone places and ballot dates in its newsletter and on its website each year.
Entry to Tauhara Te Ahorangi starts with a pre-enrolment form and an interview with whānau and kaiako. The school asks that children have attended kōhanga reo for at least two years or have te reo Māori spoken at home. New entrants start school in groups on set dates under cohort entry.
